Rod developed his interest in dermatology while working in a prison in Doncaster and established clinics for patients with skin problems and this culminated in him being given a pharmaceutical care award for his work in 2003. He trained as an independent prescriber and in 2007 worked under a dermatologist for an intermediate care dermatology in East Yorkshire and was a member of the group that developed the NICE psoriasis guidelines in 2012.
Since 2010 Rod has worked with Robert Gordon University where his work has focused on the role of pharmacists in supporting patients with skin problems. He also writes educational articles on dermatology and contributes a regular column to the British Journal of Dermatology nursing. He is project guardian for the CPPE dermatology modules, contributes to the teaching of undergraduates at Bradford University and is a member of the advisory group to the all parliamentary group on skin.
